Why I Read Books

Pulling open the double doors, I paused, breathing in the familiar scent of espresso beans and fresh ink. What could be better than a Sunday afternoon at my favorite store?! We all have a happy place, and this was mine. After securing a cappuccino, I aimlessly strolled through the paperback aisles, searching for the perfect book. Fiction? Historical? Poetry? How could I possibly choose just one book? Ducking into a less crowded aisle, I explored my options. Bright, eye-catching, matte book covers lined the shelves, each inviting me to open its contents and breathe the scent of paper.

An hour later I finally decided between several books. I’d chosen two classic, collectible editions and a historical fiction piece. As I made my way to the register, I overheard a conversation between a couple.

“Why do you need that book? Reading is such a waste of time.”

I paused before ducking into a nearby aisle, confused as to what I’d just heard. The woman responded to her significant other:

“But I like to read. I find books enjoyable, and I learn something.”

“Yeah, maybe for smart people.” He scoffed, “Don’t waste your time on books.”

Reluctantly, the woman put her book back on the shelf, forcing a smile as she made her way to the door.

As a literary nerd, I immediately lost it. Books were the only escape I had as a child due to my shyness. Who does he think he is? Doesn’t he know books weren’t just for enjoyment but also for learning? Rolling my eyes, I clutched my books and made my way to the register. I couldn’t believe there were people out there that considered reading a waste of time.

The Most Important Book

After purchasing my treasures, I pondered the strangers’ conversation during my ride home. I began to feel another set of emotions: that of sadness for people who considered books to be a waste of time. Books have always held value to me; they’ve transported me to another world. A world filled with hope, inspiration, and memorable characters. And while I’ve read a multitude of unforgettable classics, somehow I’ve neglected the most important book of all. This book is filled with characters from all walks of life—people from varying backgrounds who have made an extraordinary difference in history. Yet, somehow, it’s often been labeled by society as dry.

As Christians, we’ve all heard similar stories growing up. Defying moments about strong characters who defeated their enemies, or overcame temptation. But how many of those stories have we forgotten? I’m ashamed to say I’ve let my Bible collect dust on multiple occasions. I’ve become so consumed with finding a new book that I neglect the most treasured book ever written. The Bible is full of powerful messages, stories, and wisdom from our Creator to guide us through our journey in life.

Are you looking for a specific genre or theme? The Bible is filled with a variety of incredible stories that will transport you into another world. If you’re feeling the urge to read, pick up your Bible and re-discover the amazing journey of memorable characters. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
