“The chief priests went on to accuse Jesus of many things, but Jesus simply stood quietly” (Mark 15:3, The Voice).
What good can your words do if liars and frauds are confronting you? Even though supposedly religious people were addressing him, Jesus knew who they really were! He knew about their lies, their lust for power, and their murderous plots, and He met it all with silence.
Earlier in His ministry, Jesus had cautioned His followers…”Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine…” (Matthew 7:6, The Voice). Those who have no capacity to receive truth won’t recognize or appreciate it when it comes their way.
At one point Pilate pressed Jesus further, “Do You have anything to say? How do You respond to all these charges that have been made against You? But Jesus said nothing more, and Pilate was astonished” (Mark 15:4-5, The Voice).
By God’s grace, we can astonish the world with both our words and our silence.
God Speaks in Our Silence
“In the secret place of prayer, where no eye but God’s can see, no ear but His can hear, we may pour out our most hidden desires and longings to the Father of infinite pity, and in the hush and silence of the soul that voice which never fails to answer the cry of human need will speak to our hearts” (Mount of Blessing, p. 84).
Prayer – “Dear God help us to know when to speak, and when to shut up!”
