A Difficult Truth

When bad things happen, we pray for instant relief, deliverance and resolution. But notice Jesus’ personal response to impending trauma. “We must allow the story of God’s kingdom to unfold” —Jesus (Matthew 26:54, The Voice).

Jesus said this in Gethsemane when the soldiers came to take Him away. Think about this the next time you are faced with hardship and loss! Think about this the next time corrupt politicians seem to be winning.

In essence, Jesus said, “Let the devil play his hand because this helps God’s kingdom to arrive!” Today the devil “plays his hand” with cancer, war, political corruption, racism, religious hypocrisy, greed, and selfishness.

An evil, sinister force is doing all it can to destroy whatever God does. In the eye of evil, there is no room for goodness and truth, no room for forgiveness. The devil is on a mission to destroy everything constructive and life-giving. And the tool he loves to use most is the well-worn utensil of “deception.” Lies, fake news, and manipulated facts create confusion in the minds of many. This is why God hates it. Deception disorients and confounds innocent people.

Seven Things God Hates

“There are six things the Lord hates—no, seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family [nation]” (Proverbs 6:16-19, NLT).

Why does God allow the devil to do this; can’t he stop him? Again we hear Jesus’ words in Gethsemane. “We must allow the story of God’s kingdom to unfold.” Allowing the devil to lie builds God’s case against him because eventually, the truth always comes out. With every false statement and lie, the devil paints himself into a corner that will eventually be his eternal undoing.

This is why the Apostle Paul said, “We cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth” (2 Corinthians 13:8, NIV). Whatever the devil does, God uses it against him.

So, yes, the devil still plays his hand, but in doing so, he’s helping to establish God’s kingdom.
