To Be A Writer

At 22 years old, I had just graduated from college and I thought that becoming an adult was the natural next step in life. I was hired for a big-girl job and started paying my own bills. As exciting as all that was, I didn’t quite have the spring in my step that I did before I was employed full time. Living the adult life wasn’t all bad, but I missed the wonderful fear of not knowing everything.

What I Really Wanted Out of Life

That was until a new friend asked me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I thought it was a joke and just told him that I wanted to do what I’m already doing. He told me to take it seriously and asked what I really wanted out of life. He said to think back to my childhood and asked what I wanted to be back then. I said I wanted to be a writer. Honestly, I hadn’t pursued writing because I didn’t think I would make it, and I worried I might not be good enough. He pointed out that I have free time now to spend however I choose.

I did have time. My inner child ignited within me and I felt happier than I thought I could. I wanted once again to chase after my dreams and be a writer. So I started researching, learning, and practicing. I even signed up for an online writing class. In addition, I surrounded myself with driven and motivated people who inspired me to keep up the pace. They continue to help keep the flame alive, and better yet, I’ve been able to spark the flame for other people. We’re all really living now.

I couldn’t be happier that I’m trying to be a writer again. I thought I was ready for a set life plan, but I’m not ready for normal anymore. I’m excited that my life isn’t set in stone and that I’m not on a straight path. I’m excited to feel young again.
