Orange Delight

Oranges are one of my favorite winter foods. I look forward to January when they become ripe enough to eat. For 12 years we lived in a coastal region of southern California and had a naval orange tree in our backyard.

Nothing compares to being able to walk over to a tree to personally harvest part of your breakfast. The flavor of the tree-ripened fruit explodes in your mouth! It’s wonderful!

Buying oranges in the store is risky. Some are so tasteless I throw them away. They are either picked too early, or have sat on the shelf too long. Once an orange loses its flavor, there is nothing left to enjoy!

Jesus said, “Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is neither fit for the land nor the dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear let him hear” ( Luke 14:35).

Again Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men” (Matthew 5:13).

If our lives lose their God-flavor, how can we bring enjoyment and blessing to those around us? We are like tasteless food that nobody wants.

Spending time with God in Bible study and prayer fills us with rich flavorful qualities that brighten and bless everyone we touch.
