Lost In the Dark

One of America’s favorite pastimes seems to be that of railing against the dark. We disdain the unjust acts of politicians who lie and line their pockets with dark money. In addition, we abhor corrupt religious leaders who use religion to further their misguided agendas. We tune into talk radio 24/7 and listen to unbridled criticism about other people who deserve to be ostracized, imprisoned, or even killed. We eat, drink and sleep negativity and wonder why we are so unhappy and fearful.

In a world that has so much potential for good, we have managed to focus on the most dark, flawed, destructive qualities of human existence, without realizing what we are doing to ourselves and others.

The very things we curse we embrace! We hate the dark, yet we expel every glimmer of light when it tries to break through. We are our greatest enemy. It is not Republicans or Democrats that we should worry about most. Our ultimate problem is not racism, hate, or sexual deviancy. These are all symptoms of a larger issue that plagues us to no end! Our problem is a lack of discernment. Through brokenness and loss we are in a fog that we cannot escape on our own.

Darkness and Lies

Simply put, we are lost in the dark!

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life” (John 8:12, NLT).

Many have twisted ideas about religion and God, and is it any wonder? The “father of lies,” the devil, is determined that we miss knowing the truth. So he floods the earth with “fake news,” lies and misinformation about God, life, and the people around us. Yet, when we hear the lies, we think we are discerning and can justly criticize others because we have “the facts.” In reality, we may have nothing more than whiffs of vapor—someone else’s lies and made-up stories.

Some of the most screwed up things that have been said have come from self-proclaimed “Christians” who dogmatically pronounce their edicts as fact. Be wary of such people.

Jesus invites us to drop everything we’ve heard and sit with Him for a bit to get the inside scoop about His Father, life, and how we’re supposed to live. Through the Apostle Paul, we learn we are to:

“Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace” (Ephesians 4:2-3, NLT).
