The Chance to Believe

The end of the year is that very special time when you look back and think about all the resolutions you made in January. Often, this looking back is accompanied by laughing, (or if you’re like me—crying), a little bit at yourself.

I don’t know about you, but for some reason when January 1 rolls around, I seem to forget my limitations and consider myself some sort of superhuman. Well, it would appear that way based on the sheer number of New Year’s resolutions I tend to make. I’m usually great at keeping them for, say, about two to three weeks. Then I somehow simply forget about them until it’s December. So here I am now. I am thinking back on the resolutions I made and the beginning of the year and realizing how few I’ve kept.

End-of-the-Year Resolution

Because of that, my roommate and I decided to keep an end-of-the-year resolution. We resolved to not eat any sugar or processed foods for the last six weeks of the year.

I really didn’t think it would make much of a difference. That is, until today.

After a hard day, a very kind coworker gave me what used to be my favorite candy bar. I was excited, even though I knew I was cheating on my plan. But when I bit into it, I recoiled. It was the most sugary and processed thing I’ve ever tasted. I thanked my coworker, then proceeded to go to my office to throw away the candy bar.

As I sat down at my desk trying to wash the taste out of my mouth with water, I marveled. Here I was, thinking that a few weeks of implementing a change wouldn’t make a difference. But my taste buds have miraculously changed!

I wonder what other things in my life I can change if I just give myself the chance to believe.

“Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him” (Mark 11:23, ESV).
