New Set of Worries

Joey Carvallo and I have been friends since before we could form memories. Our moms were best friends, so it was the most natural thing in the world that we would be too. We spent our childhood baking cookies with our moms and recording our radio show, “The Joey and Jael Radio Show,” on Mrs. Carvallo’s cassette recorder. Joey always got to be the lead radio show host, and I was relegated to weather girl. Joey always had a way of getting what he wanted.

As an adult, Joey turned out pretty well. He now goes by Joseph and has three beautiful children with his wife, Jamie. However, Joseph and Jamie have had a hard financial time in the past couple of years. Despite their struggles, they’ve managed to create a happy environment for their three lovely girls and maintain an unyielding trust in God. What I love most about them is their transparency. They’ve openly shared their struggles with the prayer group we’re in.

New Job, New Worries

Last week, the Carvallos came to our prayer group with great news. Joseph had just accepted a higher-paying job that would significantly alleviate their financial struggles.

After our group offered our congratulations, Joseph opened up about his fears. He admitted that even though this new job was everything he prayed for, he was now bombarded with a new set of worries. “I know I prayed for this, but I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Am I going to be good enough at my job? Will they take their job offer away? Is this going to help my family?”

The group thanked Joseph for his candor and shared that they’d all experienced the same thing in one form or another. Then we all wondered why this happens so often. Why is it that when things are going well, we automatically start worrying about what could go wrong?

I pray that the next time I wonder when the ‘other shoe is going to drop,’ I can remember that God loves to lavish His children with good things. Or as my friend Joseph so beautifully put it, “I know that God’s not going to trick me.”

“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him” (Luke 11:11-13, NIV).
