The Gift of Laughter

The ability to laugh is one of the greatest gifts that we have been given, and we’re blessed to enjoy it. How long has it been since you had a “cut-loose-shake-all-over-belly-laugh” that takes over your entire body for a few moments? You know the kind that I’m talking about. The laugh that hits you suddenly and makes your whole world just a little bit brighter for a moment?

It happened to my family the other night in Walmart as we were shopping. We came upon a good friend and were enjoying an animated conversation when I did something that caused the entire party of people to laugh out loud right there in the center aisle. I was emphatically saying something. I threw my arms out to the side to punctuate the point I was attempting to make. My right arm hit a sign right above a stack of ketchup, and the sign was sent twirling around and around on its stand before I knew what was happening.

Yes, I was a little embarrassed, but the laughs that ensued were almost worth it. It was a small unexpected thing that just randomly occurred. Everyone standing with us seemed to enjoy the spontaneity of it all.

The scriptures tell us that a merry heart does good like medicine. Perhaps laughter is just the medicine you need today.

Thank you, Lord, for the gift of laughter. Please help me to keep my joy through my entire day. Amen!
